PIN BHABHA PASS TREK – 2013

Share

PIN BHABHA PASS TREK is my first ever Himalayan trek. I enjoyed a lot throughout the trek; it was adventuresome & unforgettable one for me.

I would like to share my experience below:

6th July 2013:

It was time for Himalayan exploration for me, so I started from my home by 7:00 AM on Saturday morning and boarded Delhi flight. After 2 and half hours of journey, reached Delhi by afternoon. Fellow trekkers Sree sudhir and Govind waiting for us in Delhi domestic airport. Ironically, Sabu and Deepak were in my flight. I came to know that they are members of my trekking group once we landed in Delhi domestic airport.

Took bus to Kashmiri Gate ISBT bus stand and reached the place by 2:30 PM. Since our bus for Shimla was scheduled for 7:30 PM, lot of time left for us. Decided to spend some time in Chandani chowk and a visit to Kareem’s hotel to taste Mughalia dishes. Experienced Delhi metro and reached Chandani chowk. With 10-15 kgs. Of backpack, we walked towards Kareem’s hotel which is nearly 3 Kms. from Metro station.

Tasted Mughalia dishes in Kareem’s hotel and walked towards Kashmiri Gate ISBT Bus stand which is 4 Kms. from the place.

Reached bus stand and boarded 7:30 PM bus to Shimla.

7th July 2013:

All of us reached Shimla on Sunday early morning and walked towards youth hostel to find rooms for our stay in Shimla. It was drizzling, after half an hour of walk on the streets of Shimla; we all reached youth hostel. Booked 4 rooms and did overnight stay here.

Fear of Rain & Landslide:

It was fear of rain and landslides happening in Himachal Pradesh made our trek to Pin Bhabha Pass uncertain and tentative. We had backup plan, if Pin Bhabha Pass is not possible we will go for Stock Kangri trek in Ladhak. Finally, after contacting our guide Prem Dorji in the evening, Pin Bhabha Pass trek is confirmed.

Our guide Prem Dorji already reached Kafnu on 6th July from Manali. He is waiting for us to join him to start trek.

8th July 2013:

Hired one Tempo traveler and started towards Kafnu around 8:00 AM on Monday morning. It is NH 22 which took us to Kafnu. En route had lunch at Wangtoo. It is beautiful view of Kinnaur district everywhere. Mountains with Sutlej river flowing across the valley. Cloudy with drizzle thought the day made our journey to Kafnu adventuresome.

Journey on narrow roads from Wangtoo to Kafnu will be unforgettable one! Reached Kafnu by 5:00 PM in the evening and relaxed for the day.

Note: Initial 3 days of trek had very less trekking, reason behind this is Acclimatization. One should adjust condition very well so trek should go smoothly.

Steep ascent at the beginning stage. Yeah! we are leaving PIN valley now…

Trail is very narrow and one should be more cautious while ascending this part of the trek.

Day 5: Trek from Phaldar to Mudh Pharka (12877 ft) – 13th July 2013

Day in Brief:

Last day of Pin Bhabha Pass trek. Our mission is to reach Mud village as early as possible, so we can leave for Dhankar and visit Kungri Monastery on the way.

All of us started from camping site around 8:00 AM. Guide told us, it was just 4 to 5 hours of trek for the day but it is turned out to be longer one and tiresome. On the way, we met up with river crossing issues. Bridge was broken and depth of river is 5 to 6 feet with flow of water force is high made situation more worsen.

Bridge was broken:( What to do now???

Finally we found the way, we walked on the glacier to cross the river which is already existing between both sides of river. It took us 1 hour to cross the river that prolonged our walk to Mud village.

It is scenic beauty of the valley made our walk unforgettable one. Looking at those mountains of Spiti valley, I felt over the moon and no words coming from my mouth. Only Wow!!! I keep on saying to Achintya, “Its Awesome dude!!! what a trek we had”.

Time taken: 7 to 8 hours

Highlights during the trek:

  1. Breathtaking view of Spiti valley.

Beautiful Mud village

BGBTD PIN BHABHA PASS TREK 2013 29
Heavenly view of the valley from Mud village!!!

Had tea and took 30 minutes of rest in Mud village. Our driver Sachin is waiting for us from the morning. Packed our luggage’s as per our need and kept luggage’s on top of the sumo.

Total trekking distance of Pin Bhabha Pass trek: Around 40 to 45 Kms.

Difficulty level: Moderate to Difficult

Note: None of the Himalayan treks are easy. Minimum 3 to 4 days one should need to spend and adjusting the climate also important factor.

There are 2 treks possible in this region:

  1. Pin Bhabha Pass
  2. Pin Parvati Pass

In this group, 5 of them are first timers to Himalayan trek so organizer decided to go for easiest Himalayan trek that’s the reason they choose Pin Bhabha Pass. Earlier they have planned for Pin Parvati Pass which is bit difficult one. Biggest reason behind going for Pin Bhabha Pass instead of Pin Parvati Pass is acclimatization. But Pin Bhabha Pass trek turned out to be difficult one and it had everything Himalayan trek should have.

Note: Pin Bhabha Pass trek is possible from either side – Kafnu & Mud village.

How to reach Kafnu & Mud village:

Kafnu: Kafnu is situated in Kinnaur district. It is around 201 kms. from Shimla. Drive on NH 22 from Shimla will take you to Kafnu via Rampur & Wangtoo.

Distance from Shimla to Kafnu: 201 Kms.

Mud village: Mud village is situated in Spiti valley of Lahaul & Spiti district. First reach Manali then take a drive to Kaza which is 201 Kms. from Manali. From Kaza, Book a sumo & reach Mud village.

Distance from Manali to Kaza: 201 Kms.

Distance from Kaza to Mud village: Around 50 to 60 Kms.

Continued our Himalayan journey towards next destination Dhankar at 3:30 PM, with that Pin Bhabha Pass trek comes to end.

For me Pin Bhabha Pass trek is unforgettable one. I have experienced many things first time in my life.

  • My first ever Himalayan trek.
  • First time experience in tents.
  • Snow walk.
  • Sliding down on the snow.
  • Unimaginable breathtaking views of Himalayan mountains.
